Our Story

Taranaki is a place of social innovation and change, with a strong history of community action.

Building on this legacy, a conversation was started in 2011 about how our community organisations could be better supported to respond to the issues of our region. Out of this conversation a capacity building incubator was born with the vision of a stronger and more sustainable community sector characterised by leading edge innovation that is supported by active peer support, knowledge sharing and thought leadership

The Wheelhouse is a product of this  conversation.

Whats in a name?

"The Wheelhouse' refers to the location of the steering wheel of a ship.  It's where the crew come to discuss where they are going, what they need to do to get there and any problems they may need to consider. It's also where plans are kept and navigation resources are used.

Occasionally ships will approach unknown waters.  At this time a pilot will often come on board to help guide them through.

Like a wheelhouse our aim is to help Taranaki community groups have important conversations about their direction, or like a pilot, assist the crew for a short time.

We're about empowering you to make a difference in the community.

The Founding Organisations

There were ten Taranaki organisations who come together to support the development of The Wheelhouse:
